7 Ways to Use Granite

Granite - a versatile, durable, beautiful material. Only something from our environment could combine all these assets. Because of all these traits, there are many ways to use granite and make it a part of your home. You may be able to think of many on your own, but here are just seven ways this is possible.

1. Kitchen countertops and islands. Granite countertops are popular for many reasons. Granite is strong, it's easy to clean, it's heat and water resistant, and it's sanitary. It makes a statement in both traditional and modern kitchens, large and small. And the color variety is staggering. As a bonus, granite countertops and island tops also improve the value of a home.

2. Bath vanity tops. Just like kitchen countertops, bath vanity tops benefit from granite's resistance to water and mold, and the fact that it's so easy to clean. It doesn't need to be sequestered to a rarely-used guest bathroom but can shine and function just as well in a master bath. And even a small bathroom improves with a granite bath vanity top.

3. Backsplashes. Granite is just as functional for a backsplash as for a countertop. It creates an excellent barrier between your wall and water or grease. Granite backsplashes work great whether you have a custom-fabricated countertop or install granite tiles by yourself. Using granite for both the countertop and backsplash adds visual continuity and saves you time and money.

4. Bathroom sinks or basins. This is a more unique way to incorporate granite in your house. Granite comes in traditional pedestal sinks, undermount sinks, or modern, angular basins. Granite sinks come with all the same traits you expect from granite countertops. The sinks are water-resistant and easy to maintain. And they will shine and glitter just like a countertop. If you want to use granite in a different way than a countertop, try a granite sink.

5. Tabletops or desktops. Granite is elegant enough for a formal dining room and durable enough for a busy kitchen. Even if you have a busy eating area, you won't suffer for making granite a part of that. It also works well as a desk for a home office.

6. Fireplace mantles. Well-crafted granite fireplace mantles make an attractive living room centerpiece. Granite can take an ordinary fireplace and turn it into a grand focal point and a place to gather with friends and family.

7. Granite medallions. Medallions are basically granite mosaics. Designs and patterns are cut and fitted onto one, large tile so it installs as one piece. Granite medallions can be used on the floor or wall, inside or outside the house. Install a medallion in the entryway or even on the shower or pool floor.

Most of these seven ways to use granite you may have thought of yourself. But now you may also have a few new ideas for how to use granite in your home. Whether in the kitchen, the bathroom, the entryway, the pool, or the office, granite is flexible and far-reaching in its uses. Try one or more of these out for yourself and enjoy granite in your own home everyday for years.
