How To Design A Lavish Bathroom?
Bathrooms are an integral part of our homes. We spend thousands of dollars on the living room or the bedroom but tend to overlook the kitchen or the bathroom. But people are spending more than $10,000 for remodeling a bathroom. Homeowners are eager to change the look of this particular place by adding marble flooring and multiple showerheads. One who is more eager to make the bathroom look lavish will go for the marble shower and the jetted tub.
Actually as a homeowner you will have a number of options for making the bathroom look chic. The best place is to start the floor. You can upgrade the flooring by adding marble or marble tiles. The marble will make the floor cold. To reduce this cooler effect, many opt for the sub-floor heating systems. Or you can also go for the low-voltage electric mats which are cheaper in comparison. They are smaller in size, but they keep the portion of the room warm enough so that one can stand on the mat and go on with his or her usual chores.
Have you ever thought that with all this remodeling in flooring, you can also add the lights which will enhance the beauty of the room? Lighting often changes the feel of the bathroom. You can install different lightings like overhead lights close to the vanity area. The room should exude a cozy feel. The best way is to take help of concealed and indirect lighting. This creates a low-key effect and you can enjoy a warm luxurious bath in the tub. If you want to increase the flow of natural light in the room, you can go for up gradation of windows. A window at the top of the shower will definitely create more light.
If the old tiles look shabby and worn-out, you can simply switch to the more classy marble tiles. The marble tiles n the floor will create some simple, yet beautiful designs. Often a change in the fixtures and accessories like an addition of the shower surround or the prefabricated tub will make the bathroom look as good as new. A luxurious showerhead will be equally impressive. The massaging shower head or the rain showers are good choices. Those who have larger bathrooms will like to create a diversion with a change in the bathtub.
There are walk-in tubs, free-standing tubs and the drop-ins. All of them are equally beautiful, but you have to think about the dimensions of the room before you choose the type of bathtub you want. Some of the homeowners are opting for the air-jet tubs. They are known to have therauptic qualities. If you feel that you are bored with the look of your bathroom, it is time to change the paint. Often so-called insignificant things like a change in the paint can create a lot of differences to the way the room looks. If the bathroom had a pale shade, maybe you could go for something brighter and colorful. Or you can maintain the subdued look by making some changes in the tiles and floor.

Granite Is A Safe Option For Your House
If you have ever thought of installing granite in your house, you must have heard those terrible words that granite emits a dangerous gas named radon and this can result in some serious health hazards. However, the hype has gone higher in recent times, forcing the scientists to involve in thorough research. The conclusion reached by them is satisfactory for those who have granite in their houses and frustrating for those who don’t.
Radon is basically a gas without and color or smell. It is a radioactive gas and contaminates the air naturally. In recent times, the United States Environmental Protection Agency has given a lot of stress on the researches to find out the exact threats that the gas poses on human beings.
Though the researchers have accepted that the granite emits the radon gas, the amount of it is far less than the amount necessary for causing health problems. There are different agencies that have carried out researches and all of them have given marble a clean chit.
The research conducted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency has found out that the granites contain certain amount of uranium and therefore can produce radioactive elements like the alpha, beta, gamma and even the radon. However, they said that there is no evidence to claim that the granite countertops pose any risk at all to the household air quality.
Florida Department of Health has reached a similar conclusion form their researches as well. However, they have not conducted specific researches on the countertops, their findings, rather, are applied to all the granites products. They too, have found out a very little amount of radioactive elements in the granite as well as most of the earthen products. Their researches have found out that we are exposed to the radiation all the time. However, the low amount of radiation dispels all the fears of the health hazards from granite countertops.
The health department of the Washington State too, has conducted a similar research. According to it, the radiation from the granite countertop can be traced only from a very short distance and the amount is very low. There is chance of getting exposed to the radiation only if a person lies on the counter for a long time.
The Texas Department of State Health Service also believes that granite is safe. Information on their site says that the level of radiation from the granite is so low that there is no practical threat from the granite countertops. In fact, the amount of radiation from the granite countertops is, according to them, less than what we are exposed to everyday.
Finally, the Health Physics Society has confirmed that there is no need to remove the granite countertops. The homeowners can go for the monitoring of the radon concentration. Still, if the owner is concerned about the radon, measures can be taken to remove the gas from the house.

Granite Countertops: Should You Be Using Them At Home?
Granite countertops add to the style quotient of the kitchens. However experts recommend that they should be tested to determine the amount of radon gas which the granite might give off. At times it is a health threat, if the amount is beyond the level which is considered safe. However according to marble manufacturers, the amount is negligible and granite radiation is not at all dangerous. They have conducted many studies in this issue. All the researches have clearly pointed out to the fact that in no situation the radiation emitted by granite is high; it is much below the threat level and cannot be said to be a cause of health hazard.
The Environmental Protection Agency says that the radon is a radio-active gas which has no smell or taste. However if it present at homes, they can affect the health of the family members. It has also been noted that radon is one of the contributory factors for lung cancer. This threat of health hazards however has in no way diminished the popularity of granite countertops. Granite is known to have a radon emission level which is much less than 4 picocuries and so it is not an issue at all. There are newspapers who have issued warning against the use of granite countertops. However all these allegations have been proved to be false as granite emits radon much below the level which is perceived to be health threat.
In fact the Marble institute of America has claimed that this demand is ludicrous, as the amount of life threatening materials is so less in granite, that there it can hardly cause any health threats. Moreover although the granite countertops have radioactive materials like potassium and thorium, the amount is negligible. The radiation level is low and is not at all dangerous for health. So the allegations against granite are baseless and they can be easily used at houses.
If you want to know about the radon levels in the granite, then it is better to conduct a test on them which will determine if the granite top is above the danger level or not. If you want to do it all by yourself, you can check it with the help of a qualified tester. After you have conducted the test, you can contact the state radon office and give them the test results. Apart from the do-it-yourself kit, you can also contact the private radon proficiency program which will inform you about a number of radon professionals who have the certifications which help them to conduct the test in your home.
Although most of the granite suppliers claim that the amount of radiation is negligible, yet health physicists suggest that one should be careful while checking the granite top. The emissions are indeed insignificant when compared to the background radiation from outer space. However one should be careful and checking the granite countertop can only ensure safety for your family. To sum up granite proves to be a wonderful choice for home décor and one can use it with comfortably to add value to the ambience of the house.

Granite and Radon Myths Debunked
You may have heard and read about the controversy surrounding radon gas and granite countertops and tiles. News reports and other media have questioned the potential health risks and this may leave you wondering if granite is safe to have in your home. There is a lot of confusion as to what radon gas is and what it can do - especially in relation to granite countertops. Before we look at some of the confusion caused, let's look at what radon really is and its potential health risks.
What is Radon?
Radon is a type of radioactive gas and is a natural product of our environment. It's found in the soil and commonly occurs in Midwestern and Eastern basements. The concentrations of this gas are usually not high enough to be a health risk.
There is a lot of fear associated with the word 'radiation' and with good reason. We've all heard about the severe health problems that can result from high exposures to radiation. So it's natural to be concerned when you read that a form of radiation may be emitted by your granite countertops. But keep in mind that we're exposed to small levels of radiation on a day-to-day basis both in and out of our homes. Whether standing in sunlight, gardening, or even cooking and watching TV, we expose our bodies to mild degrees of radiation. So the health risks associated with radiation don't necessarily depend on the radiation itself but the concentration, source, and exposure and duration of the radiation.
That said, the radon levels found in granite through scientific studies show that they are usually safe. So now that we know what radon is let's find out what it is not.
Radon is Not Like Carbon Monoxide
Some believe that radon gas is like carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is produced by cars, water heaters, and furnaces while low concentrations of radon are emitted by the soil and other products of our environment. Carbon monoxide can build up and poison a person quickly and without any warning. The amount of radon found in the surrounding soil, your basement, or even emitted by your granite countertop is unlikely to pose a health threat. Proper ventillation in basements especially can keep radon from concentrating and building to unhealthy levels. If you feel you're being exposed to unhealthy concentrations of radon gas, seek the help of a radon organization in your area.
Radon Cannot Be Measured by a Geiger Counter
You may have seen pictures of a Geiger counter on top of a granite countertop. This is somewhat misleading as Geiger counters only measure radiation, not radon gas specifically. The counters can't identify where the radiation is coming from or the type of radiation emitted. And since we've already established that radiation is emitted by varied sources, including the sun, a picture of a Geiger counter on top of a granite countertop is not very conclusive. Again, proof of radiation does not automatically mean there are health risks. Several factors including the concentration of radiation and the amount and duration of exposure all play a role.
Food Cannot Absorb Radon
Food placed on a granite countertop cannot absorb radon. A radioactive element would have to be dissolved in water first before it could be absorbed by food. Before you panic about the vegetables or fruits left out on the counter, keep in mind that even some foods give off a tiny amount of radiation, including potatoes and bananas.
Now that you know what radon is, where it can be found, and what the known health risks are you can rest at ease. Just remember that radon is not a stealth killer like carbon monoxide; Geiger counters cannot measure radon specifically; and food left naked on the granite countertop will not absorb radon. Keep your family healthy by being aware and knowing what's real and what's not.

Seal Granite Countertops To Keep Them Alive Life Long!
Granite is most beautiful, durable and elegant countertop material available in the market. When brand new, it dazzles the attention of everyone you invite to your home. But, if you fail to take its care, its shine will eventually dissolve into a dull surface that can never be repaired.
By its very nature, Granite is a highly polished stone, but the fact of the matter is that it is still a porous material. This makes it very susceptible to stains because they can seep into its surface. Also, some granite materials have small cracks due to natural stresses on the stone during formation. That's why it is necessary to seal granite countertops to prevent chemicals or other damaging substances to penetrate into the stone and cause staining and discoloration. Without being sealed, Granite's porous surface will easily stain and become dull.
If you have accomplished a good job of properly sealing Granite, you need not worry about water spills, burn stains from hot pots or scratches from knife chops. Granite is one of the hardest natural materials you can ever find for a countertop, and they can even withstand the abuse that careless children leave on them. If you follow this important step, the countertop will require very little maintenance throughout its life and keeps alive as such.
Two main rules of thumb in sealing are:
1) Sealing provides a protective barrier against surface staining and etching. Sealers act as a layer that guards liquids and other harmful products from sinking into granite's surface in the first place.
2) It enhances Granite color and adds to the shine and beauty of your new counter tops and makes them elegant for lifelong.
If you have recently bought a Granite countertop, you probably need not worry about sealing.
Nowadays, most of the Granite countertop suppliers sell granite countertops that have already been sealed, however, it is advised to ask the supplier just to be sure.
While resealing Granite annually is ideal, it is recommended that you reseal it at least every two years. However, the frequency depends on where your granite countertops are located and how much they are used. At more frequently used surfaces, you must seal granite countertops as often as every 6 months. If they are in a place that is not used very often, then it is good enough to seal granite countertops once a year.
Sealing and resealing your granite countertops is not hard to do and is well worth the work. You can always call a local granite dealer to do this sealing work if you prefer, but either way, mark your calendar and get it done each year. Just keep in mind that it is important to reseal granite before its sealing has expired, so that moisture or any harmful products won't get time to sink in. If needed, there is a simple way to check if your Granite countertop needs new sealer. Spill a few drops of water onto the countertop. If the drops absorb into the surface, you need to reseal it. If the water beads up, then your sealer is working.
Although sealing your Granite countertop can protect it from stains and harmful products, it will not protect it from everything. They just need regular cleaning and the occasional sealing to keep them sensational and to make them last. So do take care of your counter tops and they will prove to be an investment you will be proud of in your home and a major selling point if you ever decide to move.

Long Term Care for Granite Countertop
Most homeowners prefer using the granite countertops and tiles in their bathrooms and kitchens for their look and durability. The granite slabs and tiles are available in a variety of patterns and hues and a person can choose the color according to his interior. They do not get scratched or damaged easily and their heat resistance makes them ideal to be used in kitchen. They are also resistant to moisture and mold formation.
Like other materials, granite countertops also need care on the part of the users to retain the look and quality. However just short term care is not sufficient if one wants to retain the beauty and glaze of the granite countertops.
The long term care for granite countertops and slabs involve reapplying the sealant. It needs to be done two times in a year. While replacing the sealant a homemaker should not compromise with quality. It would be a good idea to ask the dealer from whom she had bought the granite countertop and find out about the sealant that is best suited to the granite surface. It is also better to hire professional services for reapplying the sealant coat on a countertop as it will allow one to achieve greater finish.
As a part of short term care measure a person needs to clean and wipe the surface of the countertop. This is something most of the users do regularly. The basic cleaning can be done with a soft cloth. There is no need to use expensive cleaning fluid for cleaning granite surfaces and an ordinary soap solution can help you to clean the surface.
However, a person needs to be selective about the cleaning solution used for wiping the countertops and floors. The Granite countertops are protected with a sealant that shields the stone from discoloration and stains. If a person uses acidic cleaning solutions this sealant can erode. Therefore, while buying a cleaner a person should look for the non acidic variants in the market.
Simple cleaning solutions are recommended for wiping and cleaning granite tops in kitchen. If no floor cleaner is found, a person can also use a mild detergent with water to clean the surface. It is not advisable to use strong cleaning products like ammonia, vinegar and bleach for granite care. Soft cloth piece and sponge should be used instead of hard and abrasive materials.
The stone cleaners should be used for cleaning granite slabs at least once every week. It cleans the surface and also shields it from damage. To ensure that the granite countertops in kitchen and bathroom look fresh and stylish over the years the users need to follow some basic rules of maintenance. While cooking, people often spill liquids and drinks on the countertop accidentally. In general Granite does not get stained easily but if the user allows the liquid to stay on the surface, then it might get absorbed. Therefore, it would be advisable for the users to wipe out the spills from the surface and not allow it to stay overnight

Maintenance Of Natural Stone Installations Like Granite Countertops
It is essential to get yourself acquainted with the basics of natural stone maintenance, irrespective of whether you already own or are on the verge of owning a granite or marble countertop or other granite installations like a vanity top. Developing a countertop cleaning regimen is all about inculcating some right habits and is not demanding. It helps to sustain the durability and the overall appearance of granite installations, making them sturdier and visually-pleasing for a lifetime of sustained use.
Maintenance of Kitchen Countertops
The most commonly-used stone for kitchen countertops is either granite or some variety of green marble. The fact is that the maintenance regimen for both of them are strikingly similar. Most folks commit the mistake of using sprays and other cleaning agents that have been randomly picked at some supermarket or discount store for cleaning countertops. Many of these cleaning agents contain chemicals that could prove to be harmful to the granite surface and could lead to the tarnishing of the shine that is associated with granite surfaces, as they are corrosive in nature. Some granite surfaces could be resistant to such chemicals but this is something that is hard to establish. Stones like marble are made-up of calcite which is even more susceptible to being damaged by harsh chemicals found in cleaning detergents/sprays.
Note: it is always recommended that at the time of getting your countertop installed, insist upon questioning your contractor whether there is a real need for using impregnators for sealing the installation. Such sealers provide a high degree of protection against chemical agents but daily usage of such abrasive agents could even dampen the effectiveness of the best of sealers and leave stains that are sometimes impossible to eliminate.
Cleaning Tips — avoid the use of generic cleaners for cleaning your granite or natural stone countertops. Instead, try to use simple cleaning aids like water and sponge for keeping the surface clean. The best possible solution for such issues is being spontaneous, i.e. do not wait for cleaning the spill and always keep a small mop or a wet sponge handy to wipe-off the spilled material off the countertop surface. The best method is not to rub away the spill, but to immediately blot it with the an absorbent material. Your countertop cleaning regimen should be a combination of:
· Spot cleaning that is done on a daily basis to remove accidental spilling on the countertop.
· After-use cleaning that is used for cleaning the countertop after every episode of using the kitchen premises, even if you have not done much activity on the countertop itself as debris tend to settle down on it
· Periodic servicing-type maintenance — this is done to address more serious issues such as—
1. Development of any minute cracks or broken edges that should be filled-up
2. Noticeable reduction in shine or overall lustre that can be solved with scheduled polishing
Many kitchens have small flower pots near/along the countertops. It should be noted that soil is the most common form of naturally-occurring abrasive agent and once it starts to get accumulated (invisible to the naked eye, i.e. in microscopic volumes) on the countertop surface, it will start to weather away the surface, every time you rub it hard with a cloth.

Installation Of Granite Countertops: Things You Should Know When Hiring A Contractor
Granite has become the foremost choice among natural stones for folks who are renovating, remodeling or setting-up new kitchen interiors. However, not many of them are well-acquainted with the very basic of granite installation, i.e. employing the services of contractors/fabricators that is crucial to ensure that the money invested in purchasing and establishing granite-centered kitchen interiors is fully realized. In fact, a wrongly installed granite countertop can lead to surmounting bills with the passage of time and repeated expenditures on repairs and maintenance issues that could have been avoided if the countertop was installed in a professional manner.
Getting Started With Granite Countertop Installation: Seeking a Contractor — for starters, granite countertops should not be installed with a view of making some quick savings, as it is only proficient professionals who are adept at handling such complex installation projects, i.e. choose and appoint a proficient contractor for the installation process. You could employ the services of independent contractors that are listed in the yellow pages or those that are provided by the vendor from whom you sourced your granite countertop. In either of the scenarios, some basic facts need to be established to ensure a trouble-free installation process:
· Establishing Quality of Services — before you confirm a contractor, it is recommended to seek the profile, photographs or any kind of records of the kind of projects that he or the firm he represents has carried out before. In fact, you can demand for such information and professional contractors would be happy to furnish such information.
· Personalization Issues — many folks might want to get their countertops installed in some very specific manner and this should be clearly explained. Your contractor should be able to understand these demands and give you the assurance that he will be able to carry out the kind of personal touches you want to your countertop.
· Equipment & Materials — along with the countertops, granite slabs may be needed to create the kind of granite ambience you want in your kitchen. The cutting of granite slabs needs diamond-tipped saws and your installation contractor should be able to source these and let you know if there are any extra charges for using such tools. Similarly, there are different granite installation techniques and each of them includes different methods of reducing the appearance of seams or creating smoother outlines and if this would need extra materials, your contractor should be able to list them.
· Additional Installation Expenses — sometimes, the installation of granite countertop is preceded by mounting metal rods or pieces of plywood that are often added to the kitchen cabinetry. This helps in establishing a strong endoskeleton that can support the countertop and ensure a lifetime of assured usage without any worries. Similarly, additional changes might have to be carried around the sink or the hob. These expenses are often not mentioned at the time of giving you a price estimate. Thus, when your contractor gives you the Supply Cost Breakdown for the granite countertop installation, he should give an estimation of the fundamentally needed, ‘could-be-needed’ and contingency supplies.
· Planning the Installation Project — many contractors are unable to plan the entire installation process and often ignore minor details like the presence of electrical sockets and taps that need to be considered when providing cost/supplies/damages estimate.

Making Informed Stone Purchases: Choosing Between Natural Stones like Granite & Engineered Stones
Nearly every individual has come across terms like ‘natural stones’ or ‘quartz surfaces’ when trying to choose a stone type for their living spaces. However, most of them fail to understand what actually comprises natural stones. Further, a very small number of prospective stone buyers are able to understand the difference between natural and engineered stones. It is vital to have a fundamental knowledge about such terms and what each of them represents in order to make an informed choice when trying to choose a type of stone for your residential or commercial needs.
Basic Difference
To help gain a basic idea about the two kind of stones mentioned above, a basic differentiating description is useful. All natural stone are minded from the Earth and are further shaped, cut and designed for commercial use and are often supplied in the form of slabs or blocks. Whereas, engineered stones are artificially-created or fabricated stones but they do contain a high degree (about 90 to 95 % of natural stone constituents like quartz crystals). Engineered stones are thus able to offer a greater range of color/design options and have gained some degree of popularity as the cheaper version of natural stones but they cannot offer the kind of resilience and elegance that is associated with natural stones like granite.
Take Note — Many people do not realize that ‘marble’ is often used as a generic term to refer to all kinds of stones that are able to develop a lustrous surface upon polishing, except granite. Therefore, when you are searching for stone vendors, advertisements reading containing the word ‘marble’ could refer to businesses that are involved in procuring and sourcing other polish-friendly stones like serpentine, travertine, onyx and limestone.
Delving Deeper Into Natural Stones
Perhaps the most common and famous among all natural stones is granite. It is considered as the sturdiest of all natural stones, making it an ideal choice for use in households in the form of countertops that are exposed to a lot of weathering due to daily usage. Granite is known to have the intrinsic qualities that make it scratch resistant and largely impervious to the use of abrasive agents. Most of these qualities are present due to the long natural process through which it is made, being constituted under the surface of the Earth. Just like granite, there are other natural stones such as marble and limestone and each of them have different characteristic features. However, these are the more porous and thus, the more abrasion-prone of natural stones and cannot offer the kind of durability that granite does and even tend to lose some of their natural lustre with continuous use.
Delving Deeper Into Engineered Stones
The most popular term used to define engineered stones is ‘quartz surfaces’ which gives the prospective buyer the misplaced impression that these are natural stones and are at par with the unmatchable qualities of granite surfaces. Engineered stones do not have the individual grain or vein patterns that are found in natural stones as they are created under a controlled and systematic manufacturing process. As a result, most engineered stones will look similar in appearance as compared to the uniqueness that is offered by nearly each slab of a natural stone like granite. The more commonly-used forms of engineered stone are Silestone and Caesarstone, as they are quartz-heavy and do offer some level of durability but it is substantially lesser than that of granite surfaces.

Maintaining Your Granite Countertops
Elegant colors, designs and also hygienic, granite is the number one choice for any countertop. Kitchen and bathroom counter tops are the ones that are most exposed to countless bacteria. The bacteria resistant capacity of granite is second only to stainless steel. Also granite will never dent, scratch or show any fingerprint left on it.
All counter tops undergo heavy usage and when you have installed shiny granite one, it is but natural to worry about its maintenance. Well the good news is that granite maintenance is not at all difficult. Just a few things to keep in mind and you will enjoy having your granite counter top for a long time to come.
The main activity, any countertop is subject to, is cleaning. Granite should be cleaned only with mild cleaning liquids. Do not use any strong, harsh or abrasive chemicals, as they might permanently disfigure or damage the surface. Cleaners with an acidic base such as bleach, vinegar or lemon juice, will dull the granite. For regular cleaning, a warm, mild soapy solution will do. If something gets stuck to the surface, which cannot be removed by scrubbing, then gently remove it with a plastic spoon or plastic knife. Granite has a very smooth surface so it is relatively easy to pry off something sticking to it. For a stain that is left by food, and is not coming off with mild soap, you can use a little elbow grease to rub the stain away.
For a stronger food stain, prepare a paste of flour mixed with soap solution or dishwashing liquid. Apply this on the stain and cover it with a plastic wrap, leaving it for at least 5 hours. Then wash everything off with water. If it is deep oil stain, use hydrogen peroxide instead of the dishwashing liquid in preparing the paste.
Spills are very frequent on any counter top. Granite has a capacity to absorb the liquid left on it for a long time and this will create a stain. So make it a point to wipe off spills frequently. You are also then free of the task of trying to remove the stains later. Frequent wipes will leave your countertop shiny and stain-free.
Another protection you can give granite countertops from staining is to apply a sealant. When a sealant is applied it creates a thin transparent shiny film on the granite. This prevents any form of moisture from seeping into the stone, causing it to stain. By sealing, you have created an artificial barrier between the granite and all the liquid spills. A better penetrating sealant will also give extra protection as it will penetrate the pores in the granite and seal them. This type of sealant will give protection for a longer duration and also enhance the appearance.
At least once a week it is advisable to clean your granite countertop with a stone cleaner. By doing this you will be able to maintain a shiny and clean surface for a long time to come.
