The trend of using natural stones to increase the esthetic appeal of their buildings was seen in the Greeks too. Greeks had taken natural stone’s usage to some new heights. Temple Of Artemis is one of the architectural examples made by the Greek empires. It had 5 stories and 127 marble columns. This made it one of the grand structures on marble. Few columns of the temple can be found till the present days as the temple had been destroyed with the spread of civilization.
Under the Greek empires, several marvelous architectural pieces were made by using natural stones. Greek people were perfect with their techniques of shaping and quarrying of natural stones. They had constructed some of the monumental structures using natural stones. Temple Of Zeus, The Theseum and Parthenon are some of them. It was under the rule of the Greek empire that marble was brought into home.
The trend of using natural stones continued in the Roman Empire. They have extensively used granite and marble. Romans were excellent road builders and preferred granite for this purpose. Pantheon in Rome is one of the pieces of Roman architecture using natural stone. Romans preferred granite for its strength and durability. They preferred marble for its beauty. The Romans have introduced building techniques using marble and bricks, which is followed even today.
Renaissance had left a great mark on the marble sculptures and architectures. It was in this period that better fabrication and quarrying techniques have been developed. From this period, natural stones were used in monuments, palaces and churches. The usage of natural stones has developed with time and is practiced till today.

Why Granite Countertops Are So Popular?
Nowadays, a lot of people opt for granite countertops when renovating their bathroom and kitchen. The same can be said about the people who are buying a home for the first time. They are also liked by the architects and interior designers. There are various reasons behind the popularity and demand of the granite counter tops.
As a matter of fact, Granite is an igneous coarse-grained rock comprising of substances like quartz, mica and feldspar. The unique blend of minerals lends it the durable and tough constitution. It is very hard and can not be scratched easily. The counter tops made from other materials are susceptible to wear and tear. But granite can look fresh even after several years of extensive use.
The mica present in granite slab makes it resistant to heat and temperature. That is why it is ideal to be used in kitchen. People who cook a lot can safely use granite countertops without worrying too much. They need not bother about cracks appearing on the surface owing to hot and steaming foods kept on the surface.
Moreover the granite counterparts are more durable compared to their wooden and ceramic counterparts and they also look nice. The appearance of the granite slabs also play a strong role behind the popularity. The commercial eateries and hotels also use granite for enhancing the look of their premises. Granite lends a touch of elegance and class to any place.
The granite countertops sold in the market are available in a plethora of patterns and colors. A person can choose a color while buying the slabs that complement the color scheme of his kitchen and bathroom. Since each piece of granite rock is different there is almost no chance of buying a common design. The cost can vary on factors like polishing and overall finish. But the quality does not vary.
Granite countertops are easier to clean as compared to other countertops. They need to be cleaned by a soft cloth and a mild soap solution would serve the purpose. There is no need to spend money in expensive cleaning products. With regular care and cleaning the granite countertops can last for many years in immaculate condition. Using a good quality sealant will enhance its life.
There are some people who still use the laminated and marble countertops. However, these materials have some drawbacks. While laminate is cheap its durability is poor compared to that of granite. It also gets affected by staining, crack and scratching faster.
Marble also has its share of limitations. It is vulnerable to staining, dulling and scratching. Hence, a person who chooses marble counter tops may have to end up spending a lot on maintenance. Using oily foods with a marble countertop can be problematic. The products with acid in the composition can also erode marble. This can become a serious problem over prolonged use. The cost of marble is also higher compared to granite. Therefore, granite outperforms both the alternatives by a large margin.

Granite Fabrication
Granite is widely used in homes and offices and for building monuments. It is the stone used to make countertops, flooring, and decorative paneling. Granite is extracted from quarries and is in a rough form. Granite fabrication is the process of converting this rough stone into a smooth finished product in the required sizes.
Granite rock is a light colored, coarse-grained igneous rock. It is one of the hardest rocks and can withstand the vagaries of nature to a very good extent. The stone itself consists of quartz, feldspar, mica and traces of a wide variety of minerals. When the igneous rock cools it form crystals. Slower the rate of cooling bigger will be the size of the crystals. These crystals give the granite rock its wide varieties of designs.
Before the granite fabrication process starts the rock has to be extracted from the quarries. Some of the countries renowned for their granite quarries are Italy, United States of America, France, China, Brazil and Spain. The type of granite will depend upon the place from where it is extracted. Quarries are on the outskirts of major cities or are positioned in high mountains. Granite is quarried and cut into blocks of sizes ranging from 5 x 5 feet onwards. These blocks are then taken to fabrication plants.
Granite fabrication starts once the raw blocks arrive at the plants. Special tools and machinery is needed for granite fabrication and has to be carried out by very skilled professionals. The blocks are cut into slabs or tiles. Usually the tiles are cut into standard sizes of 12''x12'', 16''x16'', 18’’x18’’ or 24''x24''. The thickness of the tile will vary from 3/8'' to ¾''. For a slab the size is usually 9'x5' and the thickness is ¾'' or more. The cutting machines have a special type of fast rotating saw, which cuts into the granite. The saw has to be constantly cooled, by spraying special coolant liquids.
The Block saw, Gang saw or the Diamond wire saw is used to cut the blocks into slabs. Then the Bridge saw is used to cut the slab into the shape, which is desired. Now a new type of machine is available which uses water jets combined with an abrasive material, to cut edges and holes smoothly and quickly.
Once the cutting is over, the polishing starts in the process of granite fabrication. The slabs or tiles are put through huge polishing machines with multiple heads that rotate at high speeds. These heads are pads covered with special abrasive compound bricks or discs. This polishing process will smooth out any roughness and will add a natural shine on the surface of the granite. These machines can produce different types of finishes. From a mirror shine finish to a flamed, tumbled or hammer finish is possible.
After the polishing, there is the routing process in granite fabrication. Routers are machines used to create the required edge profiles on the slab. These machines can also cut designs for larger slabs used in fireplace mantles. For countertops the machine can provide a standard or a highly decorative edge.
