A mosaic can add variety to a paved area surrounding the home. However, the entire process is not very complicated and what is more, it is not very expensive as well. Still, there are certain things that you have to consider before going for a mosaic. Read on as we tell you more…
Tip 1: The most important thing to decide prior to the laying of the mosaic is to ensure the design that you want. There are plenty of them. You can pick up the animals, geometric, landscape, medallion, and art and so on to serve your purpose. The mosaics come in different shapes and sizes. So, prior to the installation it is good to plan out the size that you want. Normally, terraces and large rooms require big ones.
Tip 2: Check out the quality of the mosaic. The best mosaics are those that are made with the original Lebanese marble. However, there are other mosaics which are made locally. They are basically made in Assisi. However, when it comes to quality nothing is as good as the Lebanese marble.
Tip 3: Once you buy the product, it is essential to open the pack and unroll the design to find out the bumps. There can also be some missing pieces and they should be found out as well. Generally, the process of opening the pack is done very carelessly. This results in the cracks in few of the pieces. So make sure that you open the pack with care to avoid any unnecessary cracks or breakages in your marble.
Tip 4: After you have unpacked the mosaic it is time for you to lay it. The first thing that you have to look after is the place where you are going to lay the mosaic. The concrete there has to be smooth, free of detritus and level. This is necessary for the successful installation of mosaic.
Tip 5: After that, you have to remove the polythene that is placed at the back and place the mosaic on the concrete floor. You can use a pencil to mark the required orientation.
Tip 6: Appearing adhesive is the next step. Take a comb spreader and apply strong tile adhesive to the concrete. However, you have to be careful that the adhesive is applied in the whole area of the mosaic. But, it should not go further. Now, you have to lay the mosaic on the adhesive. Take a mallet made of rubber or wood and hammer it to level the floor. However, while doing this, you should be careful that the stones are not chipped.
Tip 7: If you have the missing pieces, you have to replace them with something similar. This can be done with the help of the general modeling adhesive or the polystyrene cement.
Tip 8: Some days after the installation, a certain amount of tile grout should be used to seal the gaps in between the marble chips. A light colored adhesive can be effective to enhance the shine. However, you have to clean the adhesive immediately after the job is done.
After the grout dries up, use special stone polish to bring out the true color and shine of the mosaic. The stone polish can be bought from masons.
